stuck in a moment

today felt like a moment which i got stuck in and couldn't get out of.

it's like that U2 song which keeps playing over and over and over in my head (even though i haven't got it in my mp3 player).

a worthy song on a bad day. cos at least, for a moment i can pretend that Bono's singing TO me, and me only..

sigh.

I gave and i finally got something back in return..

Perhaps I've begun doing things right. So I flipped the pages of the paper and I found THIS (and another article too)! Aaron's published my piece in (almost) mint condition.

Thank goodness all his nagging and coaching did not go to waste.

Celebrate by Giving
By Cheryl Tan

Bags and bags of old clothes, plush toys and foodstuffs cluttered the foyer of T19.

Was it a flea market?Actually, it was a jumble of used items collected for a good cause.

Marking the end of the School of Business’ (SB) Community Service Day, items collected over a 2-week period were handed over to The Salvation Army (Singapore) on 31 May 2006. Bags filled up all five collection bins, leaving many others lining the floor within the designated collection area.

The charity drive, initiated by a team of three lecturers and headed by Madam Chew Suan Chin, was created as part of the School of Business’ 20th Anniversary celebrations two months ago.

Mr. V. Maheantharan, Director- School of Business, said: “As educators, it is our duty to facilitate care and giving. We held this charity drive so that our students would start to think about someone else more in need than themselves.”

With the tagline ‘Celebrate by Giving’, the event engaged some 2660 students, as well as 121 members of staff from three departments; namely the School of Business, School of Media & Infocomm-Technology (SMIT), and the Department of Math & Science (MS).

Mr. Richard Goh, Operations Manager for Red Shield Industries-Singapore, said of the donations: “This collection will make up items to be sent to Tanjong Pinang by the Navy at the end of June 2006. The people in that area, such as fishermen, villagers as well as students who may not have classrooms to study in, require help.”

Response from the students was positive as some donated items even at the very last minute. This led to a change of the collection deadline to 30 May 2006.

Phyllis Toh, Second-year student from SB, said: “At the end of the day, these will go to a good cause. I chose to donate some clothes, toys and books- things which appeared on the (Salvation Army's) wish list.”

Mr. V. Maheantharan felt that the positive response to the charity drive is a sign that “we should do more (of these activities), not once in 20 years”.

The collaboration with Salvation Army is a first for the School of Business. Other community involvement projects by SB included island-wide reading sessions on 30 July 2005 as part of the Speak Good English Movement.

The School of Business’ 20th Anniversary celebrations was launched on 12 January 2006 with SB Day, where a flea market concept was adopted for students to hone their entrepreneurial skills. A special 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner was held on 9 March 2006 at Sheraton Towers, where Singapore Polytechnic’s Principal, Mr. Low Wong Fook honored the achievements of past and present SB students.

pitch.

i would never, ever make another pitch. even if Johnny Depp comes before me and attempts to convince me otherwise.

of course, this would mean that the door to a lot of jobs will close. however, given that i would graduate from tai-tai university, this is just a little problem at this point of time (since my mother would very much bother about when i get an income statement enough to get her another car).

not dead, but not too dandy either..

it's a bit sad how people define success by the amount of nominations they get. by the amount of prizes or awards they win. by the number of gadgets they clad themselves with (which then becomes a fashion accessory).

it's rather disgusting how people seek comfort in the weakness or misfortunes of others. are arrogant at the simplest of gains.

but wait, didn't the elders always say that what goes around comes around? and that there's always such a thing as retribution.

so take a seat in a nice little corner and wait for the show to begin. for the higher you are, the harder you'll fall.

in other news, i'm not very optimistic about all that's going on right now.

i expect a drastic fall in GPA and also a lost in a substantial financial lost. don't know why. but it's just one of those little sinking feeling..

oh the fine line i thread..

for a week or so now, I have been living like I haven't really slept. I would fall asleep in front of the telly-which i keep on to accompany me- or the computer-doing homework, duh. life unbeyond school (Vern theory)- at around One-ish in the a.m.

at around three a.m. i would wake up, a puddle of perspiration already lovingly absorbed by my (already-not-too-new) pillow(it does get thirsty sometimes). awaken by a nightmare, which i can't really remember it at this moment in time.

i calm myself down and fall back into slumber.

and the nightmare will hit the rewind button and then push play. a rerun of the scenes which tormented me an hour or so ago! i dare say that even cable tv or 'live' shows aren't as keen on encores.

i would then wake again, at around Five-ish, thinking that it's the sun beating down on me. but in fact my eyes plunge into darkness.

i won't be able to sleep after that. i'd toss and turn until it's time to pick myself off the bed. get dressed. and head out for the activities of the day. it's mainly school.

but it's torturous enough as it is now. when my mind is in school yet my heart is someplace else where it needs me more.

but i join the crowd and make the monotonous ride to school. staring into the blank space. and thinking. at how scary it would be to be an adult. for people approach me for an advice every day for the past week- big ones at that. yet when i do dispense some (which in my opinion are sound and realistic ones), they ask me to stay out of the situation.

and when i do make myself a part of the wall (not relac one corner, i just try to turn into sludge and stick on to it-wall), they say i'm indifferent. and not trying to help make things a little better. that when i go and buy myself a brownie they stare at me.

IF having to turn 21 is so tough, then i'm happy being forever eight. so i won't be made to give suggestions which would not even be taken seriously. so i won't be accused for indifference by trying to maintain my composure and stay out of things as i've been told to.

happy birthday in advance to myself. i expect a very tough journey hereon.

in times of trouble, close your eyes and pray. i'm afraid i've suddenly lost my belief in faith.

didn't get to go to the hospital because i had just recovered from fever and my brother is now the latest carrier of the virus that's been going around.

if listening to cantonese commentary of all that's going on is any good, i wished i didn't hear any and could just shut myself out from the world.

and i've got an insensitive boss who thinks he's so great and that everyone in the comm is stupid, effed up and/or sucks. that instead of giving me space and time to just shut off for awhile, needs to launch into meeting agenda which consists of

1. bitching;
2. bitching;
3. bitching; and
4. bitching.

despite all the talk about professionalism, he is the person who's been conducting himself completely and irrationally, unprofessionally. tsk tsk tsk..

anw, something DID make me a little happier today. a local chinese terrestrial station has decided to COPY (almost) wholesale the "Will you Marry Me" commercial by Nokia to publicise one of their latest shows.

here's the Nokia video, for those who haven't seen it before. for those who have, reminisce about the time when you first saw it.

as someone has not uploaded the terrestrial tv one YET on YouTube, do take a look out while you're channel surfing..

oh. so. original..

Sigh^3

Don't lie. because i (almost) always can see through them. it's just a matter of whether i'd want to break your little bubble of hur-hurs in your head when you think you've successfully tricked those around you.

in other news, i suspect one of my bosses has a problem with everyone except himself/herself. because as of now, he/she has blamed everyone except reflecting on what he/she could have done better. even after the story of scolding a five year old child and asking him to clean up after himself immediately after.

and in other Other news, my grandfather has been warded into hospital and needs dialysis. he refuses treatment. And kids, like i've said so many times. Never, ever go against your doctoro, because when you need him most he wont treat you because you've not listened to him when you most needed to..

alright, time to head to the hospital now.. time to clock the other 6500 words there..
